“My general philosophy is always trying to do two things at once.”

Megan Rapinoe is describing her approach to investment, but she could be referring to her career in general.

One of the most decorated soccer players in history, Rapinoe has always been more than “just” an athlete. She has combined a playing career which has seen her win two Women’s World Cups and an Olympic goal medal with activism, investing and writing a New York Times bestseller.

Her investment portfolio includes mental health care startup Real, fashion and lifestyle brand Re Inc and Mendi, a company co-founded and run by her sister, Rachael Rapinoe, that makes CBD products for athletes.

“I feel like a lot of the investments that I’ve chosen to make are in either new, burgeoning spaces, or disruptive spaces,” Rapinoe tells me in an exclusive interview.

“In my personal financial portfolio, my financial advisor and firm have a huge commitment to impact investing. Of course, we’re trying to make money and to be successful, but we also want something that’s going to be disruptive and provide a new way forward. I don’t think we can just continue to do the same things.”

The latest investment from the USWNT star is in STATSports. The GPS data company was founded in Northern Ireland in 2007 with three clients. Today, it works with 500 sports teams across 60 countries and has grown 200% year-on-year for the past three years. The company is planning an IPO next year, with a potential NYSE listing.

STATSports has previously brought in English Premier League players like Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Harry Maguire as investors and ambassadors. Now, ahead of a US campaign launch on November 9, the company has linked up with American players Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Timothy Weah (Lille), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig) and Caden Clark (New York Red Bulls).

As with Rapinoe, the players have invested in the business and will promote it as ambassadors.
